Set up and use Apple Pay with your Apple Watch

Get started by adding your credit or debit card to Apple Watch using the Watch app on your paired iPhone.

Before you begin

Here's what you need to start using Apple Pay:

  • Apple Watch paired with iPhone 5 or later
  • In Canada: watchOS 2 or later and iOS 9 or later on your iPhone
  • In the UK: iOS 8.3 or later on your iPhone
  • In the US: iOS 8.2 or later on your iPhone
  • Canada, United Kingdom, or United States as your selected region
  • An Apple ID signed in to iCloud* (Make sure you're signed in to iCloud on your iPhone and your Apple Watch.)
  • Supported card from a participating bank or store
  • A passcode on your Apple Watch and Wrist Detection turned on*

Use these steps to set up Apple Pay on your iPhone or iPad.

Set up Apple Pay

Even if you already set up Apple Pay on your iPhone or iPad, you need to add your payment cards to your Apple Watch using the Watch app on your iPhone. Unlock your Apple Watch, then use these steps to set up Apple Pay.

To add a card that's already on your iPhone:

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap the My Watch tab.
  2. Scroll down and tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
  3. Tap Add next to the card that you want to add.
  4. If asked, enter the card security code.
  5. Tap Next. Your bank will verify your information and decide if you can add your card to Apple Pay. If they need more information, they'll ask you to provide additional verification. You can verify your card any time after you've added it to the Watch app on your iPhone. Just return to the app, tap the card, tap Enter Code, then follow the instructions.
  6. After your card is verified, tap Next. You'll receive a notification on your Apple Watch that your card is ready for Apple Pay. Then you can start using Apple Pay with your Apple Watch.

To add a different card:

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap the My Watch tab.
  2. Scroll down and tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
  3. Tap Add Credit or Debit Card, then tap Next.
  4. If you have a supported credit or debit card on file with iTunes, enter the card’s security code. Otherwise, use the camera to capture the information on your credit or debit card. Then fill in any additional information needed, including the card security code.
  5. Tap Next and continue with the verification process, if necessary.

Use Apple Pay in stores

You can use Apple Pay with your Apple Watch to pay in stores that accept contactless payments. Look for one of these symbols at checkout:

Some stores might have this symbol on their card readers and POS terminals, but they might not be currently set up to accept contactless payments, including Apple Pay. If you can’t use Apple Pay at a store that's displaying the contactless payment symbol, please let us know using our Apple Pay feedback form.

Pay with your Apple Watch

  1. Double-click the side button.
  2. You'll see your default card. To change cards, swipe left or right.
  3. Hold the display of your Apple Watch within a few centimeters of the contactless reader.
  4. Make sure that you hold your Apple Watch near the reader until you feel a gentle pulse and hear a tone. That's how you know that your payment information was sent.

If you're in the UK and your purchase is more than £30, you might not be able to use Apple Pay at some merchants. In Canada, if you use a card other than American Express and your purchase is more than $100, you might not be able to use Apple Pay at some merchants.

Use a rewards card

At participating stores, you can easily receive or redeem rewards using Apple Pay. Add a rewards card to Wallet, then use it when you pay with Apple Pay.

  • If you turned on Automatic Selection on the rewards pass, double-click the side button and hold the display of your Apple Watch up to the contactless reader.
  • If you didn't turn on Automatic Selection on the rewards pass, double-click the side button, swipe to select the rewards pass you want to use, then hold the display of your Apple Watch up to the contactless reader.

Your rewards card will be applied to the purchase and payment will be made using your default card with Apple Pay. Some merchant terminals might be set up to request your rewards card separately from payment. At these merchants, only your rewards information will be applied at first, then you can pay using Apple Pay after the cashier or terminal requests payment.

Manage your cards

After you add credit or debit cards, you can change the default card, update your card information, or remove a card at any time.

Change your default card

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap the My Watch tab.
  2. Scroll down and tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
